Implementation Options Overview

You have the flexibility to choose an implementation that suits your needs, whether it’s a straightforward drop-in module that bypasses the need for certification, or opting for a comprehensive custom development solution provided by your team or one of our member companies. This range of options allows you to integrate MILAN seamlessly into your system according to your specific requirements and resources.

Options by Complexity

This overview presents a range of options categorized by their complexity, beginning with the most straightforward solutions. Each option includes a brief introduction highlighting key features, and for further details, you can explore the provided links that lead to comprehensive descriptions, certified modules, and contacts for AVNU members who can assist with implementation.
Pre-Certified

SELF-CONTAINED MODULES

Self-Contained Modules are ready-to-go, certified Milan modules that allow end products to be registered with Avnu without additional testing.

As a manufacturer, you still have to become a member and register your products as certified products, but no testing is needed.

Milan Endpoint Hardware Modules

These modules are defined as hardware modules that contain all necessary elements to form a Milan endpoint. That includes the external network connector(s), all hardware and software (firmware) that is needed to run Milan, and some kind of audio interface for inputs and outputs. This interface may be analog or digital, depending on the module; but it will be a hardware signal, e.g. analog audio, TDM or I2S bus etc. All such a module needs to work would be a power supply.

Additional Functionality

Additional functionality may be included with such modules, such as DSP for loudspeaker processing, support for other formats, and so on.

Fixed Features

The Milan features of self-contained modules are principally fixed, but can typically be changed upon request. Such change may or may not lead to additional certification requirements.

Fast Track Certification

COMPONENT MODULES

Component modules contain the core hardware required to integrate Milan functionality into your product while retaining design flexibility.

These modules can be incorporated into your custom PCB design, allowing for cost-efficient solutions tailored to you specific needs. Please consult the individual product specifications to determine what external parts may be required.

Avnu Express Test Suite Certification

Component Modules need additional certification via the Aanu Express Test Suite. This is an abbreviated certification flow (“Verification Flow”) where the manufacturer of the component module can carry out the necessary certification steps, making the process easy, fast, and low cost.

Additional Functionality

Additional functionality may be included with such modules, such as DSP for loudspeaker processing, support for other formats, and so on.

BUILDING BLOCKS

Going one step further than Component Modules, Building Blocks are pieces of hardware and / or software that can be used to build a fully working Milan system.

These Building Blocks may or may not be pre-certified, but either way, any product built this way will need a full certification (“Certification Flow”).

Building Blocks Overview

Using Building Blocks gives you as a manufacturer a wide range of options. Building Blocks include semiconductors, software IP, FPGA code, and reference designs. Some Building Blocks can be implemented by yourselves, and some need the support of the manufacturer of the Building Block.

Additional Functionality

Additional functionality may be included in Building Blocks, such as DSP for loudspeaker processing, support for other formats, and so on.

FULL DEVELOPMENT

Of course it is also possible for you to develop your Milan application from the ground up. To that end, all specifications are available.

If you are interested in this path, we do recommend to get in touch with some experienced developers of MILAN products first – we are happy to help!
